Sule Lamido Backs Goodluck Jonathan As PDP Strongest Southern Candidate for 2027

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has declared that no southern candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can rival former President Goodluck Jonathan if he chooses to contest the 2027 presidential election. Speaking yesterday, Lamido praised Jonathan’s political experience, cool-headedness, and willingness to listen, positioning him as the PDP’s best option from the South.

“With all due respect to the PDP, I do not see a better alternative to Jonathan if he comes to PDP,” Lamido said. “Who is there in PDP that can stand Jonathan politically, in terms of being there in office, in terms of being cool-headed, in terms of being willing to listen and believes in partnership?”

Lamido suggested that other prominent PDP figures, such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, would likely step aside for Jonathan, emphasizing the need for unity to prioritize Nigeria’s leadership. He urged the party to approach the 2027 election with sobriety and focus, warning against internal rhetoric that could distract from the goal of defeating President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Commenting on Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected, Lamido dismissed its relevance, noting that no PDP candidate has been selected yet. “Has there been a convention? Has he emerged?” he asked, stressing the need for a strategic and unified approach to challenge Tinubu in 2027.

Lamido also criticized Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to deliver on campaign promises, particularly on power supply. Quoting Tinubu’s own words, Lamido said, “If you go by what Tinubu said, that if we fail to give you power in four years, please don’t vote for us, I think that today, there is no excuse that he has not failed.”
