During the consultative meeting at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua signaled support for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 presidential ambitions for several political reasons:
- Opposition Unity: Gachagua stressed that the opposition must field a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto. Backing a single leader prevents vote-splitting and strengthens their chance of securing a first-round victory.
- National Reach & Youth Appeal: Sifuna, leading the Linda Mwananchi movement, commands significant youth support and aggressive grass-roots appeal. Partnering with him allows Gachagua to build a broader national coalition.
- Mt. Kenya–Western Alliance: Combining Gachagua’s strong Mount Kenya electoral base with Sifuna’s influence forms a formidable regional voting block capable of achieving the 50%-plus-one threshold.
- Shedding Ethnic Labels: Hosting diverse opposition figures helps Gachagua shed the "tribal leader" tag and rebrand as a national kingmaker.
Gachagua reaffirmed his flexibility regarding the coalition's lineup, noting he is open to serving as Sifuna's deputy if the broader opposition unites around Sifuna's candidature.
