The Jigawa State House of Assembly has officially endorsed the creation of State Police in Nigeria.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, disclosed this on Tuesday 28th October 2026 after a closed-door session with lawmakers.
According to him, State Police is necessary to address insecurity, kidnapping and banditry in Jigawa and other parts of the North, and also to create jobs for youths.
Jigawa State is now the latest state to join the list of states supporting the constitutional amendment for State Police.
With Jigawa's approval, the total number of states that have approved State Police creation has risen to over 28 states across the country.
Some of the states that have already approved include Delta, Kebbi, Kaduna, Anambra, Plateau, and others.
The Federal Government and National Assembly are currently working on a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow states to establish their own police.
Many Nigerians believe State Police will help fight insecurity at the grassroots, while others fear governors may use it to intimidate opponents.
