Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. As a shy kid who was heavily bullied in school, he escaped into books and computers. At just 12 years old, he coded a video game called Blastar and sold it for $500.
The Big Risk
At 17, Musk left South Africa for Canada, then to the University of Pennsylvania in the US. He dropped out of a Stanford PhD after just 2 days because he believed the internet was more important.
His First Billions
1. Zip2 (1995): His first company - an online city guide. Sold for $307 million.
2. PayPal: He co-founded X.com which later became PayPal. eBay bought it for $1.5 billion, and Musk walked away with $180 million.
Betting Everything
Instead of buying yachts, Musk risked everything:
- SpaceX (2002): Everyone said private rockets were impossible. The first 3 launches failed and he was nearly bankrupt. The 4th launch succeeded. Today, SpaceX is worth over $200 billion and takes NASA astronauts to space.
- Tesla (2004): People laughed at electric cars. Today Tesla is the most valuable car company in the world and forced the whole world to go electric.
- X (formerly Twitter): He bought Twitter for $44 billion in 2022 to protect free speech.
He also runs Neuralink (putting chips in brains), The Boring Company (tunnels under cities), and Starlink (internet from space).
Family and Lifestyle
Elon has 12+ children, is famously a workaholic who sleeps on the factory floor, and says his goal is not to be rich, but to make humans a multi-planetary species.
His philosophy is simple: "When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor."
From a bullied kid to a man who shoots rockets into space - Elon Musk proves that crazy ideas can change the world.
