Senegal has opened Africa's largest football academy in Diamniadio, Dakar, aimed at training 10,000 young players yearly, on October 19, 2026.
The $80 million Senegal Football Academy was funded by government, FIFA and private investors. It has 20 pitches, 5 dormitories, classrooms, a medical centre and a data analysis lab to rival European academies.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said Senegal wants to stop talent drain to Europe and develop world-class players at home. Senegal won AFCON in 2021 and reached World Cup quarter-finals in 2022, inspiring youth.
The academy will recruit from all 14 regions of Senegal plus Guinea, Mali and Gambia. Players will get formal education plus football training. Partnerships with Bayern Munich and AS Monaco will provide coaches and exposure.
Former star Sadio Mané, who grew up in a village, donated $5 million and said the academy will give rural kids a chance. Over 50,000 applications were received in the first week.
Experts say Senegal's model of combining education and sports can reduce unemployment. The academy also includes a women's wing for 2,000 female players, the largest in Africa. Senegal aims to produce 100 professional players for Europe by 2030.
