Selaju Sampan – Preserving a Maritime Tradition in Padang, West Sumatra

The Selaju Sampan race, a vibrant traditional rowing competition in Padang, West Sumatra, has deep historical roots tracing back to the Dutch colonial era. This maritime sport was already popular after the 1930s, bringing together local communities along the Batang Arau River in spirited contests of strength, speed, and teamwork.

Padang is the most well-known area for hosting Selaju Sampan, especially in the Batang Arau and surrounding coastal regions, where rivers and waterways are integral to daily life. The city’s waterfront community has long embraced the event as both a competitive sport and a cultural celebration, attracting participants from various neighborhoods.

However, history has not always been kind to this cherished tradition. In 1938, the event came to a halt due to the outbreak of World War II, which disrupted many cultural and social activities in the region. It was not until around 1951 that Selaju Sampan made its return, reviving the festive spirit among the people of Padang. Yet, political unrest in 1965 once again forced the race into hiatus.

A new chapter began in 1980, when Selaju Sampan was revived for the 35th Indonesian Independence Day celebration. Since then, it has been more than just a sporting event—it has become a living symbol of community pride, cultural heritage, and the resilience of local traditions. Today, Selaju Sampan continues to draw spectators and participants alike, preserving a maritime legacy that bridges the past and present.
