Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied reports that he asked Nigerians living abroad to stop sending money to their families at home.

The Labour Party candidate said his message was twisted by some people to create false impression. He said he did not ask diaspora Nigerians to stop supporting their families.

Peter Obi made the clarification on his official social media account on Sunday. He said his message at a recent engagement in Canada was about encouraging Nigerians abroad to think beyond remittances and invest in the country.

According to him, remittances from Nigerians abroad are important for many families. He said what he meant was that Nigerians in diaspora should also consider investing in productive sectors that will create jobs and help the economy grow.

The clarification comes after a video circulated online claiming that Peter Obi told Nigerians abroad to stop sending money home. The video caused reactions on social media with many people criticising the alleged statement.

Peter Obi said the video was edited and taken out of context. He said he values the contributions of Nigerians in diaspora to national development. He said diaspora remittances contribute billions of dollars to Nigeria economy annually.

The former Anambra State governor is currently on a tour to meet Nigerians in diaspora. He has been speaking about governance and economic development in Nigeria. His tour includes meetings in Canada, United States and United Kingdom.

The 2027 general election is drawing closer and political activities are increasing. Peter Obi was the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 election. He came third in the election according to results declared by INEC.

His supporters known as Obidients have continued to support his political activities. They said his message was deliberately misrepresented by political opponents.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has declared a nationwide prayer and fasting for peaceful elections in 2027. The bishops said the prayer is aimed at securing credible vote.

Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to remain peaceful and focused on issues that will improve the country. He said Nigeria needs good leadership to overcome current challenges.
