Google AdSense Announces Major Update to Video Publisher Policy - All You Need to Know

In a recent communication to AdSense publishers, Google has unveiled a significant update to its Video Publisher Policy set to take effect on April 1, 2024. This update is poised to impact a wide range of publishers, extending the existing policy to cover all video inventory, including AdMob, under the Google Publisher Policies.

Key Policy Updates:

1. Expanded Coverage: The Video Publisher Policy will now apply to AdSense, Ad Manager, and AdMob video inventory monetized with Google ad code.

2. Accurate Inventory Descriptions: Publishers are required to provide accurate signals regarding the audibility of ad placement and declare the type of ad placement, distinguishing between 'In-stream' and 'Accompanying Content' placements.

3. Supported Implementations: In-stream or accompanying content placements must use the Google Interactive Media Ads SDK or Google programmatic access library on supported platforms, unless through an official Google beta program.

4. Protection of Advertiser Value: Video Inventory content or controls must not be obstructed, hidden, or non-functional, and audio ads must not be served in muted placements for in-stream placements.

5. User Respect Guidelines: The policy emphasizes autoplay guidelines, allowing only one Video Inventory to autoplay with sound at any time, and introducing sticky video inventory with specific requirements, including a dismiss option.

Implementation Deadline:

The updated policies are set to be enforced from April 1, 2024. Publishers are strongly urged to review the changes and ensure compliance with the new requirements.

Impact on Publishers:

Non-compliance with the updated policies may result in the disapproval of video inventory. Publishers are encouraged to thoroughly assess the impact on their current practices and make necessary adjustments to adhere to the updated guidelines.

Appeal Process:

For publishers whose video inventory was previously disapproved but may comply with the updated policies, a review or appeal process will be available starting April 1, 2024.

This announcement marks a strategic move by Google to streamline policies across its products and align with industry standards. Publishers are advised to stay informed and proactively adjust their practices to ensure continued compliance with Google's policies.
