The 2023 BET Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating outstanding performances in music, TV, film, and sports. The event honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and featured a diverse array of talented artists.
Notable winners included Burna Boy and Tems, prominent Afrobeats stars. Burna Boy secured the esteemed 'Best International Act' award by surpassing nominees from various countries, while Tems earned the 'Best Collaboration' award for her contribution to Future's hit track, 'Wait For U'.
Although only a limited number of categories were announced during the live telecast, additional winners such as Latto, Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, 21 Savage, Coco Jones, and Teyana "Spike Tey" Taylor were recognized for their exceptional achievements.
The ceremony commenced with an exhilarating lineup of performers, headlined by Lil Uzi Vert as the opening act. Afrobeats sensation Davido and hip-hop pioneers The Sugarhill Gang delivered unforgettable performances, captivating the audience with Davido's chart-topping songs from his latest album, including 'Unavailable' and 'Feel'. International celebrities enthusiastically joined in, dancing to the infectious beats and popular dance steps.
The awards show paid tribute to the late Biz Markie with a touching rendition of his iconic track, "Just a Friend". Memorable moments of the night included Warren G's performance of "Regulate" and heartfelt tributes to Tupac Shakur and Takeoff by Quavo and Offset of Migos. Tyga took the stage later, treating the crowd to a memorable rendition of "Rack City".
As the broadcast approached its conclusion, a medley of Busta Rhymes' singles was performed to honor his lifelong success, followed by an awe-inspiring all-star hip-hop tribute.
