Several studies have shown that people of the African descendants are at an increased risk for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) occurrence and progression to end stage renal disease. This study aimed at determining the prevalence of the various CKD stages based on estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) calculated from Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration Initiative (CKD-EPI) equations and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) and established if there is correlation between the two equations in people who are actively shisha smokers. A total of one hundred subjects were recruited for the study. Out of these subjects, 84(84%) were male while 16 (16%) were females. The mean age of the subjects was 26.26 ± 3.26 years. Serum creatinine was determined using the routine Jaffe method. The mean serum creatinine was 54.73 ± 26.61 µmol/L. The highest CKD stage observed using the CKD-EPI equation was CKD stage 2 with a prevalence of 7%, followed by CKD stage 3A with the prevalence of 2%. While by using MDRD equation the highest CKD stage observed was CKD stage 2 with the prevalence of 4% followed by CKD stage 3A with the prevalence of 1%. Pearson correlation studies shows no significant association between the two eGFR equations used (r = 0.184; p = 0.067). The highest CKD stage observed using the CKD-EPI and MDRD equation was CKD stage 2 with a prevalence of 7% and 4% respectively. However, if adequate measures are not taken early, these subjects may progress to CKD and to end stage kidney failure. Keywords: Chronic Kidney Disease, Prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease 55
