Big debate is happening right now inside the National Assembly in Abuja.

Federal lawmakers in the House of Representatives and Senate are debating a new Electoral Reform Bill that will change how 2027 general elections will be conducted.

The bill proposes early release of election funds to INEC, mandatory electronic transmission of results from polling units, and stiffer penalties for vote-buying and electoral violence.

Many Nigerians on social media say this reform is long overdue after controversies in 2023 elections. Civil society groups like Yiaga Africa have welcomed the bill but said lawmakers must not water it down.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the National Assembly wants to give Nigerians a more transparent election in 2027. Opposition parties say they will watch closely to ensure the final law truly favours the people.

If passed this month, this could be the biggest change to Nigeria's electoral law since 2022.
