How to Sew a Male “Danshiki” (Up and Down)

The male Danshiki, also known as Agbada Danshiki, is a traditional African outfit consisting of a loose-fitting top and matching trousers. It is elegant, comfortable, and worn for both casual and ceremonial occasions.

Material to Use:

Cotton, brocade, guinea brocade, linen, or wax print (Ankara) are ideal fabrics. Choose materials that are breathable and of medium weight for comfort and ease of sewing.

Measurement Guide:

Before sewing, take the following key measurements:

Shoulder to shoulder – for the width of the top

Chest circumference – for body fitting

Top length – from shoulder to desired top length (usually around 30–36 inches)

Sleeve length – short or three-quarter style

Waist, hip, thigh, and ankle circumference – for the trousers

Trousers length – from waist to ankle

Cutting the Fabric:

1. Top (Dansiki): Fold the fabric into two. Mark the neckline at the center, and cut based on your desired shape (round or V-neck). Mark shoulder width, armhole, and top length. Cut straight down, then shape the sides slightly for a clean fit. Cut two sleeves separately.

2. Trousers: Fold the fabric. Mark waist to ankle length, hip width, crotch depth, thigh, and ankle. Cut accordingly, ensuring both legs are equal in size. Add an elastic or drawstring waistband.

Sewing Process:

Join the shoulder and side seams of the top, then attach sleeves. For trousers, sew the legs individually before joining at the crotch. Finish with hemming and waistband.

This simple yet elegant attire is both cultural and stylish.
