CAUSES OF SOIL EROSION IN NIGERIA/WEST AFRICA

These are many but a few of them can be mentioned

A.Shifting cultivation method of farming which involves clearing and burning of vegetation-cover.This exposes the bare ground to erosive agencies.

B.Stock - grazing especially in northern parts of Nigeria and west Africa. These areas have thin vegetation -cover and over -grazing exposes them to erosion by the wind.

C.Heavy rain fall especially in southern Nigeria and west Africa.Run-offs result in sheet and gully erosions e.g .,in Agulu area in Anambra state , Nigeria.

D.The strong wind in northern Nigeria and in some northern parts of west African countries are also capable of eroding the land surfaces.
