"Why College Is a Waste of Time in 2025 (And What to Do Instead)"

Is a College Degree Still Worth It in 2025?

In 2025, the traditional college path is becoming less relevant and more expensive than ever. For decades, college was sold as the golden ticket to success. But in today’s fast-changing world, that promise is starting to look like a very expensive myth.

Let’s start with the numbers. The average college degree in the U.S. now costs over $100,000, yet nearly 40% of graduates end up in jobs that don’t require a degree at all. Worse, millions are stuck with crippling student debt, working low-paying jobs that barely cover rent, let alone loan payments.

Meanwhile, skills—not diplomas—are what employers actually care about. Tech giants like Google, Apple, and IBM no longer require college degrees. They’re hiring based on what you can do, not where you went. In industries like coding, marketing, design, and even AI, self-taught professionals and bootcamp grads are landing high-paying roles faster and cheaper than their degree-holding peers.

The job market moves faster than universities can update their outdated curriculums. By the time a college program adds a course on, say, generative AI or blockchain development, the industry has already moved on. That’s not just inefficient; it’s a massive waste of time and money.

And here’s the kicker: everything you need to learn is already online. Platforms like YouTube, Coursera, and Udemy offer world-class education for a fraction of the cost or even free. Add in mentorship, networking, internships, or building your own projects, and you’ve got a practical education that actually prepares you for real work.

This isn’t to say college is useless for everyone. If you're becoming a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, formal education still matters. But for most careers in 2025, college is an overpriced relic of a system that no longer works for the average person.
