Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian, and writer who is best known for his character of "Mr. Bean." He was born on January 6, 1955, in County Durham, England. His father, Eric Atkinson, was a farmer, and his mother, Ella May, was a housewife. Atkinson grew up in a small village in England and attended the Chorister School in Durham.
Atkinson initially studied electrical engineering at Newcastle University but soon switched to studying drama at Oxford University. While at Oxford, he became a member of the Experimental Theatre Club and began performing in comedy revues. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1975 and then pursued a career in acting,but got rejected because of stammering. Realized stammering disappear when he played a character.
Atkinson's first major television appearance was in the BBC's "Not the Nine O'Clock News" in 1979, which he co-wrote and performed in. The show was a critical success and won him the 1981 BAFTA for Best Light Entertainment Performance. He went on to star in his own sketch comedy show, "The Rowan Atkinson Show," in 1981.
In 1989, Atkinson created the character of Mr. Bean, a clumsy and eccentric man who gets into all sorts of comical mishaps. The character became hugely popular and was later turned into an animated series and two feature films. Atkinson has since become synonymous with the character and has reprised the role on numerous occasions.
