One of the things to do while in a relationship is what I call a "periodic check"

Once in a while, call your partner and ask him/her how you have fared over the course of the week, month, months or even over the year.

Things like this.

Honey, have I been too busy lately and maybe I haven't had enough time for you?

Has our communication dwindled a bit?

Have I been nonchalant over the course of the month?

Do you think I have changed in the past 3 months?

What and what do you think we can improve and work on?

I call this a "periodic check". It keeps you in check and if at any point you guys need to improve or make an adjustment.

This will help to foster communication and also help in building a better understanding.
