Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s potential entry into the political arena has sparked sharp debate within the Abagusii community, following remarks by Kisii politician Denis Kibagendi on the matter.
Speaking in what appeared to be a response to critics, Kibagendi stated that Matiang’i’s candidacy is not being driven by the sole aim of securing an outright electoral victory. Instead, he explained, the plan involves fielding Matiang’i as a candidate, with the understanding that even a loss could position him for strategic post-election negotiations.
Kibagendi emphasised that this approach should not be viewed negatively, suggesting it could serve as a calculated move to strengthen the community’s bargaining power in the national political landscape.
Significantly, Kibagendi also noted that the door remains open for a pre-election pact with President William Ruto, indicating flexibility in Matiang’i’s political positioning.
Such a pact, he argued, could help advance the interests of the Abagusii people while ensuring representation at the national table.
Addressing the ongoing public exchanges within the community, Kibagendi urged restraint, calling on Abagusii residents to respect differing opinions.
He warned that verbal attacks and insults directed at those holding alternative political views only deepen divisions and weaken collective influence.
The remarks have added a new dimension to discussions around Matiang’i’s political future, with observers noting that the strategy, if pursued, could reshape alliances ahead of the next general election.
