Government warns Kenyans against using tourist Visas for jobs abroad

The Kenyan government has issued a strong warning to citizens against using tourist visas to seek or undertake employment abroad, calling the trend illegal and dangerous.

Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Directorate of Immigration Services, officials have raised concerns over a growing number of Kenyans traveling to countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and parts of Europe using visitor or tourist visas, only to engage in job hunting or informal work. Authorities say this misuse of visas not only violates immigration laws of host countries but also puts individuals at risk of detention, deportation, and exploitation.

“Tourist visas are strictly for leisure and short-term visits. When Kenyans use them to seek jobs, they are breaking international visa regulations and exposing themselves to serious legal consequences,” said a senior immigration official.

In recent months, several Kenyans have been deported or detained in foreign countries after being found working without proper documentation. Some have also fallen prey to human trafficking and exploitative working conditions, especially when desperate to legalize their stay or find employment.

The government is urging job seekers to follow legal procedures when pursuing employment opportunities abroad, including securing proper work permits and verifying job offers through licensed recruitment agencies.

Labour rights groups have echoed the government's sentiments, noting that the misuse of tourist visas often stems from misinformation, desperation, and promises by rogue agents.

Kenyans are advised to consult with the Ministry of Labour or embassies for accurate information before making travel plans. The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens abroad, but stressed that individuals must take responsibility and avoid shortcuts.

“Your safety begins with following the law,” the government cautioned. “Don’t risk your future for short-term gains.”
