Long ago, the cat lived in the forest like other animals. The lion was his best friend and they went everywhere together. The cat thought the lion was the strongest animal in the world.
One day, the lion went out to hunt and he caught a rat. The rat was the servant of the elephant. A few days later, the rat did not return home in the evening and the elephant sent his other servants to look for him. They searched for hours but they could not find the rat.
At last, somebody told them that the lion had killed the rat. When the elephant heard this, he was very angry. He went at once to the lion. He asked the lion why he killed his servant. At first, the lion looked away and did not answer the elephant. When the elephant asked again, the lion got angry and told the elephant to leave. They, however, started to fight. It was a great battle. Finally, the elephant killed the lion. The cat watched the fight. He sat on the branch of a tree and saw everything. When he saw how the elephant killed the lion he said to himself, 'Oh! He must be strong indeed. I should make him my friend.'
The cat climbed down from the tree. He went and rubbed his back against the leg of the elephant and said he wanted to be his friend. He and the elephant went off together. They were always together. One day, the elephant was going through the forest, eating leaves and enjoying himself. Then a hunter came along; the hunter stood behind a tree and shot the elephant. Down fell the elephant. The cat did not know what to do. He said to himself, 'So there is somebody who is stronger than the elephant. I should make him my friend.' The cat followed the hunter home. That is how the cat started living with man.
