How to Sell Your Old Phone Online in Nigeria Without Getting Scammed – 2026 Guide

Got an old Tecno, Infinix, Samsung, or iPhone sitting in your drawer? That “useless” phone can still get you ₦15k to ₦120k in extra cash. The problem is, selling phones online in Nigeria is a minefield. One wrong move and you’ll lose both the phone and the money.

I sold my Infinix Hot 12 last month for ₦42,000 in less than 24 hours. No stress, no scammers. Here’s exactly how I did it.

1. Pick the Right Platform for Your Phone
Jiji.ng: Best for popular brands. Wide reach but lots of lowballers.
Facebook Marketplace: Faster for local sales. You can check buyer profiles.
WhatsApp/Telegram Groups: Good if you’re in “Phones for Sale” groups. Buyers know prices and move fast.

Check 3 similar phones on Jiji that sold recently. Average the price. That’s your real market value.

2. Price It Right or It Won’t Sell
Buyers expect to negotiate 5-10% down. Be honest in your description. Write “Battery health 78%, no face ID, minor scratch” instead of “neatly used”. Honesty gets serious buyers.

3. Take Photos That Make People Stop Scrolling
Use daylight, no flash. Show front, back, sides, and screen with time visible. Include photos of any scratches. Add the box and accessories if you have them. Good photos = faster sales.

4. Avoid Scammer Tricks
Watch out for:
“I’ll send my rider” who asks you to pay delivery first.
Fake bank alerts. Always check your bank app.
Buyers who refuse to meet in public. Meet at a bank or police station.
Anyone rushing you to send the phone before payment clears.

For phones above ₦50k, use cash only.

5. Wipe Your Data Properly
Back up photos and contacts. Sign out of Google and iCloud. Factory reset. Record a 30-second video of the reset as proof.

My Result
I posted my Infinix on Facebook Marketplace at 8 PM with 6 clear photos. By 10 AM the next day, 3 people had messaged me. I met the buyer at GTBank, confirmed the alert, and handed over the phone. No stress.

Final Tip
Be honest, take good photos, meet safely, and confirm payment before handing over the phone. You don’t need to give your phone away for cheap.
